One Global Innovation Capital

See what we've been up too

On December 1st, 2021, we celebrate one year of Innovate Edmonton and the successes of Edmonton's innovation community.

From day one, our purpose has been clear: unite a globally recognized innovation community to create jobs and enduring economic vitality. We’re one big tent. We thrive when we act as one.

In 2020, Innovate Edmonton was established with the blue-sky mandate to harness the transformational power of innovation and community building under a single identity. The eight-member board was selected by Edmonton city council, and represents a diverse mix of entrepreneurs and governance experts. Following a competitive national search, Chief Executive Officer Catherine Warren joined the organization on December 1st of the same year.

We welcome all, with an expansive definition of innovation once reserved for certain people with particular skillsets. For us, an innovator can be anyone.

Because it starts with one. One community. One great idea. One powerful connection.

Our innovation approach is inclusive by design — nurtured across all sectors, industries, and backgrounds. There is potential in all of us. Let's take it to the world.

Simply put, we are positioning Edmonton as a global innovation capital with innovations that tackle the world's greatest challenges. Through three distinct program divisions - Startup Edmonton, Scaleup Edmonton, and Accelerate Edmonton - we steward innovation-intensive entrepreneurship at every stage of growth.

We are placemakers, transforming Edmonton's downtown and taking innovation into the public realm. We forge partnerships locally, nationally and internationally because we're stronger together. This is innovation made in Edmonton, for the world.

The following report is a reflection on one year of Innovate Edmonton and a celebration of the innovators that have propelled Edmonton for many years. We hope you join us as we continue to write the story of this great city’s economy and culture.

It starts with one.
It starts with Edmonton.
It starts with you.

One great idea.

One powerful connection.

One community.

One global innovation capital.
